So I bought a chicken teriyaki and rice noodles for lunch one day and I thought to myself: “That looks easy.” And it is. I’ll admit I’m no cooking expert, but if I can do it, so can you.

What you need:

> 150-200g (5-7 ounces) Chicken – fresh, frozen, whatever
> 150g (5 ounces) Rice Noodles
> 100mL (1/2 cup) Teriyaki Sauce – whatever you like (I like ones with sugar as a main ingredient)
> 150g (5 ounces) Vegetables – preferably broccoli with mini corn (maybe some cut up Bok-choy). Whatever you use, make sure it’s colourful because it will be the only colour in the meal.
> Vegetable Oil – or Canola or maybe Sesame (Olive might taste weird)
> A deep cooking pan (AKA a skillet) or a wok that you can scratch without ruining it and a sharp knife.
> 1/3 of a yellow onion (and maybe a bit of garlic, or whatever you like to give the chicken some taste)

My cooking time: 1 hour (I’m slow and I did most steps one after another, but set aside an hour to be safe)
Feeds 2-4 people: you can use more stuff, but these amounts filled up my whole 12″ pan.

1. Prepare rice noodles according to the directions on the box: My box said to let the noodles sit in some hot water for 30 min. The box said not to over soak them, but I say don’t undersoak them.

2. While your soaking your noodles, start browning your onion in a bit of oil (in the pan). You should probably cut up the onion before browning it. Make sure the onion gets brown or it won’t taste good. Some might get a little burnt, but it’s okay.

3. If your chicken is frozen, defrost it now. I defrosted it 3 times for 1:30 min each and separated the chicken in between. Once it has defrosted enough that you can move it easily, add it to the browned onion. As the chicken cooks, start cutting it up into smaller pieces (this is why you need a pan you can scratch).

4. Heat up your vegetables in water. Depending on what your cooking it might take awhile (don’t worry if it takes longer than the chicken, just keep the chicken heated on low). Taste the vegetables as you go to find out when they’re done.

5. By this time your noodles should be soft enough to eat easily (don’t worry if they smell a little bit, mine did and they still tasted really good later on). Drain them and add them to the fully cooked chicken.

6. Add the teriyaki sauce. And toss it all like a salad.

7. Add the cooked vegetables. Toss it like a salad again. Cook it on low heat for awhile to make sure the sauce soaks into to everything.

Enjoy. You can eat it with chop sticks! (or a fork if you’re lazy or have small vegetables)

They are fairly healthy and cheap. While in University I found “Maple Style” Beans and figured I should try it out (I have a sweet tooth). So I tried it and I like it. It takes only 45 seconds in the microwave to heat up half a can and it tastes great, much better than regular beans. I like to eat it on weekends since it is a little heavy on the stomach, but for some reason it makes me feel good after a late night. I specify the (ironically named) No Name (R) Maple Style because it is the cheapest and tastes the best by far (mainly compared to Heinz Maple Beans). Nutrient Info:

- Add celery/apple (for Chicken and Tuna) – adds some crunch and flavour. Apple is better than it sounds

The Salad King is a very popular restaurant in Toronto. There is a good variety of Thai dishes, including curries, noddles, meat, seafood and vegetarian. You get to choose your dish’s level of spiciness from mild to 20 chillies. It is a great place to go for lunch or dinner. Try to go after the lunch rush or before the dinner rush to avoid waiting for a seat.

I had #76 the Seafood Combination with three chillies of spiciness. It came with shrimp, squid and broccoli with coconut and chilli sauce and a side of steamed rice. The seafood was cooked well and tasted great. I do not like extra spicy food, but three chillies was the perfect level for me. The best part was the sauce. It was amazing on my rice. Water is at all the tables, but the rice is the most useful thing to cool a burning mouth.

My friend had #65 Orange Chicken with one chilli of spiciness. It came with breaded crispy chicken and vegetables with sweet and sour sauce and a side of steamed rice. He said it was delicious and seemed to enjoy it.

I recommend Salad King for a casual lunch or dinner. Try something new or satisfy a craving for spicy food. You may have to wait to get a seat and you will be sitting beside strangers, but the food is worth it. It is inexpensive and delicious.

My friend was visiting town so a group of us had dinner at Hosu. It is a great restaurant and we have eaten there many times before. They have soups, bento boxes, sushi and other East Asian entrees. Most dishes start with small vegetable appetizers, a small soup and a small salad.

Personally I always have the 141 bento box because it has a little bit of everything: chicken teriyaki, shrimp and vegetable tempura, California rolls, rice and coleslaw. It is actually very filling and a very good value at $9.95.

I highly recommend Ho Su for your next dinner. Even if you are with people who do not eat fish, there are many meat and vegetarian entrees to satisfy everyone. The restaurant is small though, so keep any groups under 8 people.

My parents helped me move into Toronto this past Labour Day. After we moved my stuff in, we went out for lunch. Since it was Labour Day not much was open. Eventually we came across The Pour House, which already had a few people in there for lunch.

The menu there had a large variety of food: Irish dishes, pizzas, pub food, burgers and I remember seeing some Asian food. There was also a brunch menu for weekends and holidays.

I had the Irish Fry from the brunch menu. It included 3 eggs, 2 pea meal bacon slices, 2 sausages, 2 pieces of toast, a little bit of fruit, some beans and a whole lot of potatoes. It is also available as an all day breakfast on the regular menu but a bit less food. It was good, it was a lot of food and it was everything you could want from an eggs and bacon breakfast.

My Mom had the fish and chips, which looked pretty large and there was malt vinegar specifically for the meal. My Mom said that it was good and she enjoyed it.

My Dad had the pubs burger, which was apparently barbequed. It seemed like a typical pub style burger, but I’m sure at every pub it is a little different.

I would definitely recommend the Pour House for a casual dining experience or as a nice pub to go to with friends.
